He was born January 10, 1927 in Barnhill, OH to Thurlow and Sylvia (Leggett) Hensel. Robert received his undergraduate degree from Otterbein College where he was a member of Zeta Phi fraternity. He later earned his Masters of Sciences from Kent State University. Bob was a veteran of the US Army during WWII where he served with the Army of Occupation in Japan. Bob was a devoted husband of fifty-eight years and a loving father. His three grandchildren were the light of his life. He was an avid golfer, skilled woodworker, and historian. He enjoyed reading and playing bridge with his friends.

He started his career as a teacher, school bus driver, and coach at Kings Mills High School. He then taught math and science at Kent Roosevelt. He spent the majority of his career at Chagrin Falls High School, where he taught physics and chemistry and coached the golf team.
