John Rock Gerlach, husband of Mary T(nee Hennie), father of Mary Ann Murnyack (Robbie), Margaret Leben (Frank), Catherine Dedor (Joe) and Helen Brown (Tim). Beloved Grandfather of 10 and Great Grandfather of 5. Preceded in death by parents Henry R Sr and Marie T (nee Oliver) and siblings Theresa (Cermak), Henry, Rita (Kurcik) and Marilyn. John graduated from Lakewood High School (1945) then graduated from the University of Michigan (B.S. 1949, M.S. 1951). He was hired at the Cleveland Metropolitan Park District (1950-1987), as a specialist in trees, wildlife and soil conservation. On many occasions John assisted Boy Scout Troops from all over the area, showing them how to plant and care for trees in the Park System. He was appointed by the Governor of Ohio to the Forestry Advisory Council (1995-1999). John was awarded a 20-year Distinguished Service Award for the Cuyahoga Soil & Water Conservation District. John was dedicated to his family and faith. He was an active participant in the Holy Name Society, Deanery President, awarded the Holy Name Deanery Life Time Award for Service to God, Humanity and the Holy Name Society. He served on the Kiwanis International Focus Committee. He applied his faith and his career to helping others as demonstrated by his willingness to travel to South Carolina after Hurricane Hugo to help landowners evaluate their property loss and when called to help in Ohio during Tornado damaged areas. He has traveled to Russia with the Eisenhower People-to-People Program and to China and Australia with the Society of Arboriculture. Funeral Mass Wednesday, June 20, St. Ladislas Church, 2345 Bassett Rd., at 10:00 am. Interment Holy Cross Cemetery.
