John Falencki, age 85, of Lorain, passed away on Wednesday, January 9, 2013 at Ames Family Hospice House in Westlake.
Born on June 10, 1927 in Lorain to the late Lucas and Victoria (nee Losiewicz) Falencki, John lived in Lorain until he went to reside at St. Mary of the Woods, Avon, in February, 2010.
John served in the US Army during the Korean War and was awarded the Korean Service Medal and a Purple Heart.
He grew up working in his family's business, Falencki Meat Market/Grocery, which later evolved into Falencki Hardware. As the family business developed, John first opened a hardware and appliance store in downtown Lorain and then opened the GE Appliance Center in downtown Elyria. He also had taught at the Lorain County Joint Vocational School and served as an investigator for the domestic relations court. In 1979, John began working as a bailiff, beginning at Lorain County Common Pleas Courthouse in Domestic Relations court for former Judge Henry Webber and then later for Judge Edward Zaleski. He retired in 1995.
He was a member of the former St. Stanislaus Catholic Church, Lorain and the parish Holy Name Society. He was also a member of the Kiwanis Club.
John was always keeping himself busy and was known as quite the "fixer-upper". He and his late wife enjoyed socializing with friends, especially with their Friday Night Social Group.
Surviving are his daughters, Linda (Jim) Focareto, of Wisconsin and Carolyn (Ernie) Falasco, of Sheffield Village; 6 grandchildren, John, Brad, Morgan, Ashley, Ernie and Carla; and his sisters, Helen Wilczak and Francis Butkiewicz, both of Lorain.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 55 years, Helen (nee Dudzic) in 2009; his brothers, Leo, Edward and Joseph; and his sister, Hattie Belczyk.
The Falencki Family will receive friends on Sunday, January 13th from 2-5 p.m. in the Dovin and Reber Jones Funeral & Cremation Center, 1110 Cooper Foster Park Rd., Amherst. Friends will also be received in the chapel at St. Mary of the Woods, 35755 Detroit Road, Avon, on Monday, January 14th from 9:30 a.m. until the time of funeral mass at 10:00 a.m. Rev. Fr. Edward Luca will officiate. Military Honors will be conducted immediately following the mass. Private inurnment will take place at a later date in Calvary Cemetery.
Contributions, if desired, may be made in memory of John, to Neighborhood Alliance (formerly Neighborhood House Association); 457 Griswold Road, Elyria, Ohio 44035.
