Horace P. "Pete" Hill, age 94, of Berlin Heights, died Tuesday June 12, 2012 at Parkvue Health Care Center in Sandusky. He was born at home on January 12, 1918 in Berlin Heights, brother Ned told the neighbor, "There's a horse in bed with Mommy". He lived on the family farm in Collins from 1949 to 1990 when he moved to Sandusky.
He went to school in Berlin Heights and graduated from Western Reserve Academy in Hudson, Ohio. He moved to California where he graduated from Santa Monica Junior College, worked in the shipyards, and for Douglas Aircraft. He enlisted in the US Merchant Marines during WWII. He served as a radio operator on the SS John Hope.
Following the war he returned to Berlin Heights, where he farmed, raised chickens, and four wonderful children, instilling in them a strong sense of family loyalty and work ethic. He also worked at Dupont in Huron and later at the Avon Lake Ford plant, where he retired in 1992. He loved tennis, playing up until he was 88, and was a member of the Baywinds Racket Club. He also enjoyed gardening and playing bridge weekly at the Senior Center for the last 20 years until losing his sight to macular degeneration. He belonged to a bridge club in Columbus with Marjorie, playing monthly and also with a group in Berlin Heights. He was a member of St. Stephens UCC in Sandusky for 21 years and was a volunteer in the church office.
He is survived by his children Adelaide Vanderpool, of Berlin Heights, Fred Hill, of San Francisco, Frank (Mary Jane) Hill, of Berlin Heights, his grandchildren, Addie, Duncan and Courtney Robinson, Pete, Noah, Liz, and James Hill, Stephanie Warnement-Sanguinetti, Marjorie, Andrew, and Michael Warnement, a son-in-law Bob Robinson, and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents Edwin R. and Elizabeth (Andress) Hill, his first wife of 36 years, Marjorie (Davidson), his second wife of 21 years Vera Warren-Hill, a daughter Elizabeth Robinson, a sister Lillian Miller, and brothers Sterling, Ned, and Theodore Hill.
