Alfred George Scherler, 80 of Avon, formerly of Lakewood passed away, Monday, May 28, 2012 at Grace Hospital , Lakewood . Mr. Scherler was born June 29, 1931 in Cleveland and had lived in Avon since 1978.

From 1963 until his retirement in 1997, Mr. Scherler worked for Webber Gage, Westlake, a Division of Starrett Corporation, working as the office manager. He was a 1949 graduate of Lakewood High School and earned a Bachelor of Science Degree in Business Administration from The Ohio State University. He was a Past Master of the Gaston G. Allen Masonic Lodge, Lakewood , serving in 1973-74 and was also a member of the Royal and Accepted Masons' Cunningham Chapter, as well as a member of the Avon United Methodist Church .

As a child Mr. Scherler developed a passion for working with horses and harness horse racing, an interest passed down from his father. For the past 35 years he has owned and raced trotters. In addition he was a model railroader and tractor enthusiast, being the proud owner of an antique Farmall Model BN Tractor. His family described him as one devoted to their needs, a loving and good father and husband, who told great stories and was known as a tuneful whistler.

Mr. Scherler is survived by his wife Kay E. (nee Kastler) whom he married June 17, 2000. Other survivors include daughters Karen A. Shannon (Bill) of Las Altos, CA and Carol J. Scherler of Lakewood; stepchildren Dave Badt (Linda) of Avon, Dan Badt (Rae) of Atlantis, FL and Linda Hoberg (Rob) of Chicago, IL, as well as grandchildren Kimberly and Amy Shannon, Derek and Tyler Badt and Makena and Faith Hoberg. He is preceded in death by his first wife Jane C. (nee Vannorsdall) and his parents Emil A. and Florance (nee Donberg).

Friends may call at the Busch Funeral Home, 32000 Detroit Rd. , Avon from 6:00-8:00pm Friday, June 1 and for one hour before the funeral Saturday. The funeral service will be Saturday at the funeral home at 11:00am. Rev. John Butchko of Westlake United Methodist Church will officiate. Internment will follow at Sunset Memorial Park , North Olmsted .
