My God, this man.

I switched my major from Psych to Theatre and Doc is partially to blame for that. He would tell me that I had a talent and that I was special and blah, blah, blah, but what he really taught me was to care. It didn't matter if I had talent or was a good actor. What mattered is that I did what I cared about. That's why he'd often give the advice "Do it!" Because he'd let

As is the way of things in these times, I found out from a friend on Facebook that Pat had passed. He was an extraordinary man.

In the spring of 1991, Pat was my teacher for Theater 251---beginning acting, which I took as an elective. My major was political science, and I needed a speech class to fill a requirement, but since I'd taken speech in high school, I figured I'd try for something different---and boy did I ever find it.

Three graduate assistants in the scene shop at the University of Colorado in 1968-69 (Pat Gouran, Roger Klaiber and myself) played an ongoing pool tournament at the student union with one or more other graduate or undergraduate students. We ate our lunches hurriedly in order to have more time for the tournament. Winning wasn't as important as camaraderie and respite from the work.

Some wintry, snowy days Pat and I would brush the 6 inches or more of snow off

I was saddened to just learn of Pat's passing. He was a colleague and mentor at Iowa State. He could bay at the moon with the best of them, and made my time at Iowa State a joy. As he always told me, "Do what you do well." Bona fortuna, Pat.

Had two classes with Doc and loved every minute of them. Auditioned for him once for Cat On A Hot Tin Roof. Drawing on my great knowledge of dialects, I reached down to channel my inner Burl Ives as I read for the part of Big Daddy. About half way through, I heard Doc's voice cutting through the stage lights. "Hey Brian... Let's lose that accent. You've been everywhere from Canada to Mexico with that thing!"

I loved everything about Doc and will miss him dearly.

My condolences to his family.

Just last week I addressed an email to Patrick but did not send it, not knowing he was already gone. I figured I would try to arrange a visit with him in Ankeny. Though I was a Business major, Patrick was such a wonderful instructor for SP CM211, and he and Jane Cox made THTRE 106 so much fun. A wonderful man who made my college experience a lot brighter, a man who could speak intelligently about any subject that

Kay, I'm happy you had those years together but I am sorry he is no longer there. Carol

Dear Kay - My heart goes out to you. A magic light has extinguished. I was always enchanted by Doc's talent, sense of humor and joy. I am holding you in my heart.

Dr. Gouran was my academic advisor when I was in ISU's theatre program back in the 70s, and one of my professors. I was so saddened today to hear of his passing. I still remember the sign he kept on the wall behind his desk chair - "Bald is Beautiful". And I smile even today when I read that. He was such a wonderful teacher, advisor, director and friend. We lost a great talent with his passing. My deepest condolences to his family.

I still remember when Dr. Gouran told me he was casting me in THE RIMERS OF ELDRITCH, my first show with him - I was so thrilled! I also enjoyed his theatre classes & had to have him as my theatre advisor - a friend & I even visited him in the hospital when he had a strangulated hernia! Somehow I don't think I know he went to Illinois State, because that is where I went for grad school -
